Brian Tracy’s “Eat That Frog” Chapter 1

This chapter is entitled “Set The Table.” this chapter is about deciding to what you want to do with your life.

Brian Tracy starts his chapter with a quote from Napoleon Hill. Rubbolite . Hill says, “There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants and a burning desire to achieve it.” You need to decide what you’re going to do before you start eating frogs.

Brian Tracy says that “the number one reason why some more work done faster is because they’re absolutely clear about the goals and objectives.” Chances are that if you’re not clear on what you’re supposed to be doing, then you are going to procrastinate. Tracy goes on to say “the major reason for procrastination and lack of motivation is weakness, confusion, and fuzzy-mindedness about what you are trying to do and in what order and for what reason.”

You know, we like to get started on stuff. But then we get distracted. E-mail pops up. Or a phone call comes in. And pretty soon we are far from doing what we’re supposed to be doing.

In this chapter, Brian Tracy establishes seven steps to increase output.

1. “Decide what you want.” This is not a guessing game. This is an exact thing. It’s tough to decide what you want. There are so many things we like to do.

2. “Write it down.” What’s really amazing about our mind is just how easy it is for us to forget what it is we want. And not just that, but also the fact that we distort it. We change what we. We say, “oh I didn’t really want that. I want this instead.” Writing our goals can keep us focused.

3. “Set a deadline on your goal; set subdeadlines if necessary.” Setting a deadline creates urgency. But it will only create urgency for you if you have consequences for not reaching your deadline. It’s honestly very easy to let a deadline slip by if you’re not disciplined to stick to it or if you don’t have any consequences for missing the deadline.

4. “Make a list of everything that you can think of that you’re going to have to do to achieve your goal.” you’ll need to include absolutely everything on this list. Don’t leave anything off. This will take extreme discipline. It’s tough. We just want to get out and do stuff. If you skip this step I guarantee that you will not reach her goals.

5. “Organize the list into a plan.” This is what is called prioritizing. Prioritizing is merely deciding what needs to be get done first and then going through the list item item and deciding which order to do them. This’ll make your goal reaching a whole lot easier.

6. “Take action on your plan immediately.” Brian Tracy says, “an average plan vigorously executed is far better than a brilliant plan in which nothing is done.” You need to start doing something. This will give you momentum. The more momentum you can garner the more likely you will be to reach your goal.

7. “Resolve to do something every single day that moves you toward your major goal.” It has to be every day. He can’t make up for the time. We can’t skip days. We think that it won’t matter if we don’t do something on a given day. But it matters. One of the things we choose to do can be small things. We can read about a key subject, or make a certain number of calls, or decide to do something for specific amount of time.

Brian Tracy’s seven steps are a simple guidelines to help you reach your goals. But, you will need to be disciplined and you will need to decide what it is you want.
